Dr. Antonecchia is Medical Director of Informatics
and a Clinical Outcomes Specialist at St. Vincent’s
Medical Center, Bridgeport, CT. He also serves as the
Chair of the Performance Improvement Committee. Dr.
Antonecchia continues to treat patients on a part-time
basis in his private practice in Trumbull, CT. Dr. Antonecchia
received his medical degree from Manhattan College in
Riverdale, NY and did his residency in Internal Medicine
(and was the Chief Medical Resident) at Westchester
County Medical Center in Valhalla, NY. He is currently
a candidate for an M.B.A. from the University of Hartford,
West Hartford, CT and is Board Certified in Internal
Medicine and by the American Board of Quality Assurance
and Utilization Review Physicians.

Monica has worked as a corporate attorney in a private

Brad J. Block, CIO of Doylestown Hospital and the Bucks
County Physician Hospital Alliance, has twenty-one years
of information technology experience, including seventeen
years in management and fifteen years in the healthcare
environment. Since joining Doylestown in 1992 as Director
of Information Systems, he has been active within the
healthcare information systems community. Mr. Block's
contributions to the healthcare industry include serving
as board member for regional and international societies,
participating in leading vendor executive advisory boards,
and frequently presenting at various healthcare related
conferences.

Information"
Barbara Doyle is Product Manager for the Care Management
System product application at CareScience. She brings
over twenty years of clinical experience to her role
in product management at CareScience. Prior to coming
to CareScience, Ms. Doyle worked as an Oncology Nurse
Practitioner at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania,
an 800-bed tertiary care institution located in Philadelphia.
After obtaining her undergraduate degree from the University
of Pennsylvania school of Nursing, she began work in
Oncology, where she served on various quality improvement
committees and ultimately moved into the role of Assistant
Nurse Manager at which time she was distinguished with
an award of nursing excellence. She then worked in various
community hospitals while waiting to serve two years
in Africa as a member of the United States Peace Corps.
After returning from Africa she completed her graduate
work in Oncology Nursing at the University of Pennsylvania,
where she earned a place in the Sigma Theta Tau honor
society and earned their leadership award at commencement
exercises. She then helped to implement both the Allogeneic
Bone Marrow Transplantation Program as well as the Inpatient
Nurse Practitioner Service at the Hospital of the University
of Pennsylvania. Ms. Doyle has written several articles
on various clinical and professional topics, and has
most recently presented at the National Association
of Healthcare Quality conference. She continues to lecture
to both undergraduate and graduate students at the University
of Pennsylvania School of Nursing.

Lori
manages the Santa Barbara County Care Data Exchange
project at CareScience. Lori brings to her project management
role at CareScience over five years of healthcare experience
in healthcare policy and research, healthcare operations,
strategy, and IT implementation. Prior to coming to
CareScience, Lori was a Senior Consultant at Kaiser
Permanente Medical Group where she oversaw healthcare
operations and IT projects. Prior to Kaiser, Lori served
as a Research Associate for the Institute for Health
Policy Studies, University of California, San Francisco
School of Medicine. Before her research position, Lori
worked as a Healthcare Analyst for the Center for Health
Services Rearch and Policy at the George Washington
University Medical Center. Lori has a B.A. from Ohio
Wesleyan University, and M.P.H. and M.P.P. from George
Washington and Georgetown University.

"Exploring and Sharing Solutions: The Stroke Collaborative"
Dr.
Frank has been the Chief Medical Officer at St. Vincent
Hospital from 1991 until present time, where he has
been responsible for the medical director structure
and the office of clinical practice management. While
at St. Vincent's he has developed numerous inpatient
clinical pathways (e.g., Total Hip Replacement, Stroke,
Pneumonia) with improved outcomes and decreased costs.
Prior to his role as Chief Medical Director he served
as Medical Director for the Operating Room. Dr. Frank
received his medical degree from Washington University-St.
Louis and a masters degree in medical management from
Tulane University's School of Health Systems Management.
Dr. Frank is a member of the American College of Physician
Executives, the Chief Medical Officer Forum, Phi Beta
Kappa and the American Society of Anesthesiologists.

Convention, 3M National Users Conference, National Utilization
Management Convention, and the Indiana Association for
Healthcare Quality Educational Conference. She has published
articles related to physician profiling and data usage
to improve clinical pathways.
Carol is a graduate of Purdue University. She is a member
of the National Association of Healthcare Quality and
the Indiana Association of Healthcare Quality.

Meg is responsible for education and consulting
services at CareScience. Meg and her team help guide
healthcare leaders to approach today's complex care
management issues by building care management processes
and infrastructure, and by providing the education,
knowledge and information necessary to effectively make
care decisions. Prior to joining CareScience, Meg was
the Director of Clinical Redesign and Outcomes Management
at Graduate Health Systems in Philadelphia, where she
managed a system-wide clinical and financial outcomes
improvement program. Meg came to Graduate Health Systems
from the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania
(HUP), where she was the Administrator of the Quality
Improvement Department. In that role, she directed the
outcomes monitoring program for the medical staff and
hospital departments and managed the information systems
that supported the performance improvement program.
Meg has additional experience working in a peer-review
organization and several years of direct healthcare
delivery. She received her M.S. in nursing and bachelors
degree from Gwynedd-Mercy College.

Theresa works in conjunction with medical and hospital
staff at Providence Medical Center to identify opportunities,
design review methodology and collect and analyze data
to improve patient outcomes. Theresa designed and implemented
an internal database to improve the efficiency and accuracy
of data collection and analysis for medical staff.
She is also responsible for designing, re-designing
and monitoring outcomes for Collaborative Pathways.
Prior to coming to Providence Medical Center, Theresa
was a Quality Review Nurse with Humana Healthcare, Inc.
where she designed and implemented patient outcome studies,
performed data analysis and worked with the medical
staff to implement interventions to improve patient
care. Prior to her practice in quality management,
Theresa was a practicing nurse with experience primarily
in emergency services. Theresa received her R.N. from
Fort Scott Mercy School of Nursing, her B.S.N. from
Kansas University and is currently enrolled in the graduate
Healthcare Administration program at Kansas University.

Kevin is Manager of Clinical Effectiveness and Quality

System in Philadelphia, PA. Through data management
and analysis he identifies areas of opportunity to reduce
clinical resource utilization and outcome analysis.
He also drives implementation strategies for improvement
and reports progress to meet financial and quality targets.
Prior to his role at Pennsylvania Health System, Kevin
was Research Director for Quality Improvement at Magellan
Behavioral Health, Inc. At Magellan, he led several
core quality improvement and outcome management programs
and coordinated the evaluation and reporting of quality
of care, effectiveness of treatment, and efficiency
of service. Kevin holds an M.A. in Applied Economics
from American University and a B.A. in Economics from
The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey.

Jones, B.S., M.S., has over 11 years in software development,
systems engineering, and information technology. As
Chief Technology Officer for CareScience, Mr. Jones
is responsible for software engineering and product
operations. Prior to rejoining CareScience, Mr. Jones
was a Vice President with Scott-Levin Associates, a
Quintiles Transnational Company, where he was responsible
for leading their Advanced Technology & Development
Department. At Quintiles, Mr. Jones also served as a
Senior Technical Executive responsible for integrating
and managing application development across four business
units. He also delivered applications to support internal
Quintiles consultants and analysts. Prior to joining
Quintiles, Mr. Jones worked for CareScience as the Director
of Software Engineering and Data Architecture. Before
joining CareScience the first time, he worked as a Senior
Technology Consultant with Booz Allen & Hamilton, integrating
and developing large scale software systems. Prior to
joining Booz Allen, Mr. Jones worked as a member of
the engineering staff at GE Aerospace Advanced Technology
Laboratories, creating expert systems in the Artificial
Intelligence Laboratory. Mr. Jones earned his B.S. at

is the Chief Information Officer of the California HealthCare

healthcare privacy and has directed the development
of software applications to streamline enrollment in
public health insurance programs and create new business
models and technology approaches for sharing health
information. Sam previously served as the Chief Executive
Officer of HandsNet, a national non-profit technology
intermediary. Prior to founding HandsNet, he directed
a community health and nutrition organization where
he pioneered the development of integrated service delivery
systems for low-income children, families and the elderly.

The Wharton School of Business. Dr. Kroch teaches and

"What Consumers Want: The Patient's Perspective"
Barbara
Lackritz ("GrannyBarb") is survior of the
disease chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). After being
diagnosed in 1989, there was literally nothing on the
Internet about CLL, and those who suffered the disease
up to that point had done so very much in isolation.
But thanks to technology and GranyBarb's willingness
to do all the footwork, now thousands of people diagnosed
with CLL have support, information, companionship and
get cutting edge medical breakthrough information from
her Web site. Currently, GrannyBarb lives in St. Louis,
Missouri and is a public school speech/language pathologist.
She volunteers at St. John's Mercy Medical Cancer Center
in St. Louis and speaks to cancer patient support programs
regionally. She is a member of the Board of the CLL
Foundation, and the Association of Cancer Online Resources.

He is currently the Medical Director of Yakima Medical
Center, active in quality and performance improvement,
and was instrumental in the implementation of the outcomes
management program. Dr. Menashe has numerous publications
in professional journals and continues to be active
in clinical practice.

As a Product Specialist at CareScience, Anya coordinates
the release of new products and upgrades. She is primarily
responsible for developing product documentation, training

sessions. As part of the Customer Solutions team, she
also assists with customer support for query creation
and other data related questions. Before becoming a
product specialist, Anya worked as an Information Specialist
for CareScience. In this role, her primary responsibility
was the processing and validation of the public data
(All-Payor 1998 State data, as well the Medicare 1999
dataset). She also worked on a select number of customer
datasets. Anya received her bachelor's degree at the
University of Pennsylvania.

Chris has worked in healthcare for the last 11 years
observing, analyzing and measuring outcomes data. She
is a Senior Applications System Analyst on the Clinical
Outcomes Research Team for Seton Health System. Her
current focus is overseeing submission of data to Internet-based
repositories for healthcare encounters and outcome data.
Chris participates on multidisciplinary teams addressing
resource utilization across the continuum of patient
care. She is the Coordinator for The Maryland Hospital
Association Quality Indicator Project, Ascension Health
Indicator Project, The Joint Commission ORYX Initiative
and The Texas Health Care Information Council Public
Data File. She also serves as the liaison to regulatory
agencies (JCAHO, THCIC, and THA). Chris has extensive
experience in decision support tools and database development
for use in tracking and report generation of clinical
outcomes.

Dr. Nelson has practiced full-time as a hospitalist
since completing Internal Medicine training at the University
of Florida in 1988. He is a former Chief of Staff at
North Florida Regional Medical Center in Gainesville,
FL, and is currently the director of the Hospitalist
Practice at Overlake Hospital in Bellevue, WA.
In 1997 he teamed with a colleague to found the National
Association of Inpatient Physicians (NAIP), which is
the medical society for the nation's hospitalists. Over
the last 8 years he has worked with more than 60 institutions
as an on-site consultant to assist in starting or improving
a hospitalist practice. He has authored a number of
publications about hospitalist practice, and is a regular
speaker on the topic at meetings and seminars around
the country.

practicing rheumatology, along with 15 years experience

Bill is a nationally Certified Emergency Room R.N.
(CEN) with over 20 years of experience in healthcare,
that includes ER, Medical ICU and Surgical ICU. He is
currently the Clinical Outcomes Manager for Neuroscience
and Surgical Outcomes at North Mississippi Health Services
(NMMC). Present projects include stroke, a Carescience
collaborative project with the focus on stroke, craniotomy
for 17 years without trauma, and CV surgery. Bill participates
on a number of teams that focus on improving patient
outcomes. In this role, Bill researches current care
trends and processes in each patient segment. Bill does
physician, facility and care processes comparisons of
NMMC and similar facilities across the nation. He then
takes the information to multi-disciplinary teams and
together they develop ways to positively effect patient
outcomes. The changes are measured and re-evaluated
for effectiveness and changes are made if needed.

Dr. Rogers serves as the Assistant Vice President
of Medical, Psychiatric and Geriatric Patient Care Services
at Rush North Shore Medical Center in Skokie, IL. In
this capacity, she has overall administrative and business
planning responsibility for several inpatient units
as well as the hospital's care management department.
She has been involved in a number of performance improvement
initiatives including several of the hospital's pathway
projects. She also serves as Project Leader for the
hospital's Utilization Management Initiative and as
the key clinical user for the CareScience Care Management
System software project.
Dr. Rogers earned her Ph.D. in nursing sciences from

Rourke

Jim is responsible for all aspects of Integration
Services at CareScience including technology direction,
business partner relationships, and integration service
processes. He has spent over 16 years gaining significant
healthcare industry and computer technology experience.
Prior to CareScence, he was a Senior Product Consultant
with WebMD. Before coming to WebMD, Jim held several
Director positions in the Product Management and Marketing
organizations with the healthcare networking company,
Kinetra, formerly IMS MEDACOM. During his tenure with
IMS and Kinetra, Jim gained extensive experience with
existing and emerging industry standards including ANSI
X.12 transactions formats, HL7 messaging structures
and strategies, and the emerging HIPAA regulations,
particularly the recently released privacy and security
regulations. Jim held primary responsibility for the
design, development and product management of the highly
successful Kinetra Internet product offering and e-commerce
strategy. Prior to the formation of Kinetra, Jim held
Executive Director positions in both the Network Services
and Application Engineering teams at IMS MEDACOM. During
his tenure with IMS, Jim was instrumental in the development
of IMS’ physician-focused clinical and administrative
applications, serving Payers, PBM’s, Hospitals, and
Health Systems. Jim completed his undergraduate coursework
at Barnes Business College in Denver.

Tarek
joined Providence Health System (PHS) in 1998 and works
on a wide variety of quality and performance improvement
initiatives, including JCAHO accreditation, clinical
performance and improving overall operational effectiveness.
His background is in health services/ epidemiology and
improving overall clinical effectiveness. His work
is now centered primarily around clinical and operational
effectiveness of PHS' major service lines, such as Cardiovascular,
Oncology and Women's and Children's Services. He was
promoted to the position of System Director, Clinical
Performance Improvement in 2000, based on the success
of developing a coordinated program to share best practices
and working together to achieve breakthrough performance
across PHS. Prior to joining PHS, Tarek worked with
Harborview Medical Center, a Level I Trauma and Burn
Center in Seattle, WA where he developed the regional
quality improvement program for multiple centers in
the area's regionalized trauma system. In addition,
he was responsible for ensuring the successful implementation
and evaluation of clinical pathways for a high priority
clinical populations. Tarek received his Master's in
Healthcare Administration and Master's in Public Health
/ Epidemiology from the University of Washington. His
Master's in International Relations stems from his prior
work with an international development at the U.S. Dept
of State and Foreign Service.

years, Carol has held a variety of positions in nursing,
case management, administration and education within
the Riverside System. Her current role at the Medical

Kristol. From November 1996 to January 1999, Mr. Tretter
served as Corporate Associate at the law firm Wachtell,
Lipton, Rosen & Katz. Mr. Tretter earned his B.A. from

As the Vice President of CareScience Services, Julie
oversees the Santa Barbara Care Data Exchange project
where she focuses on building business approaches and

and the advancement of industry standards. Prior to joining
CareScience, Julie was with the healthcare practice of
Deloitte Consulting where she specialized in the use of
information technology to improve patient care. Before
her time at Deloitte Consulting, Julie worked as a C.P.A.
and healthcare consultant for Ernst & Young (E&Y). At
E&Y she worked on the operational improvement of hospitals
and health systems as well as financial valuations and
market entry feasibility studies for long-term care facilities.
Julie obtained her M.B.A. from the Wharton School at the
University of Pennsylvania in Healthcare and Operations
Management and received her bachelors of arts from Franklin
and Marshall College in Lancaster, PA.

Robert
Wachter, M.D.
Associate Professor of Medicine and Epidemiology

Workshop:
"Starting or Improving a Hospitalist Practice"
Dr. Wachter serves as Associate Chairman of the
Department of Medicine and Chief of the Department's
Clinical Service at Moffitt-Long Hospital. Dr. Wachter
is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School
of Medicine and was a resident and Chief Resident in
Medicine at UCSF. He completed the Robert Wood Johnson
Clinical Scholars Program at Stanford University before
joining the UCSF faculty in 1990. Before assuming his
present positions, he served as the Program Director
for the Sixth Annual Conference on AIDS, and the Director
of UCSF's Internal Medicine Residency Program. He has
published more than 50 articles and one book in the
areas of clinical epidemiology, health policy and economics,
medical education, and ethics. His 1996 New England
Journal of Medicine article entitled "The Emerging Role
of Hospitalists in the American Health Care System"
was the first to recognize and define the new specialty,
and he chaired a national policy conference on this
topic in December 1997.
